Air Fryer: How It Works, Common Issues That We Fix

Air fryers have taken Nairobi kitchens by storm — and for good reason. They promise crispy, fried-style results with a fraction of the oil, and they deliver. But as with any appliance, faults develop with use. At Cooker Repair, we diagnose and fix air fryers across all major brands and models.

How an Air Fryer Works

Despite the name, an air fryer does not fry in the traditional sense. It is essentially a compact, high-powered convection oven designed to circulate superheated air at high speed around food.

Here's the process:

  1. A heating element warms the air. Located at the top of the unit, the element heats very rapidly to temperatures between 150°C and 200°C.
  2. A powerful fan circulates the hot air. This is the critical difference between an air fryer and a regular oven. The fan drives hot air in a rapid circular pattern around the food basket below.
  3. The Maillard reaction creates the crispiness. The fast-moving hot air strips moisture from the food's surface quickly, triggering the same browning reaction that deep frying achieves — but without submersion in oil.
  4. A thermostat maintains the set temperature. The control board monitors and regulates heat throughout the cooking cycle.
  5. A timer controls the cooking duration and typically cuts power at the end of the cycle.
  6. The food basket sits in a drawer that slots into the unit. Most baskets have perforations to allow full air circulation underneath as well.

The interaction between the heating element, fan motor, and control board is where most faults originate.

Why Repair Rather Than Replace?

Most air fryer faults are component-level issues — a failed fan motor or a burned-out element — that can be fixed quickly and affordably. Replacing a working unit just because one part has failed is wasteful and unnecessary. Our technicians carry commonly needed components and can restore your air fryer to full working condition in a single visit.
