How to test if your infrared oven thermostat is faulty

Place an independent oven thermometer on the center rack. Set oven to 180°C and preheat for 20 minutes. If actual temperature deviates by more than 10-15°C (e.g., reads 160°C or 200°C), the thermostat misreads.

Repeat at 220°C. Consistent swings confirm failure, as infrared ovens rely on precise sensor feedback for emitter control.

Multimeter Continuity Test

Safety first: Unplug oven or switch off breaker. Remove back panel to access thermostat (photo wires first).

Set multimeter to ohms (lowest range). Touch probes to thermostat terminals with dial OFF—no continuity (infinite resistance). Turn to 180°C—continuity (near 0 ohms). No change means faulty switch contacts.

For capillary types, heat sensing bulb in hot water while testing; contacts should open above set temp.

Visual and Cycling Checks

Observe preheat: Emitters should cycle on/off smoothly every 5-10 minutes at steady temp. Constant glow or no heat signals stuck thermostat.

Listen for excessive clicking from controls, indicating failed regulation.

Infrared-Specific Notes

Infrared models show emitter inconsistency despite stable display, as thermostat fails to modulate radiant output. Test multiple settings; precision matters more than in convection due to direct heating.
