Cooker & Food Steamer: How They Work, Common Issues That We Fix

Steaming is one of the oldest and healthiest cooking methods — it preserves nutrients, colour, and texture that boiling strips away. Electric steamer cookers and food steamers make this method effortless and consistent, and they have become a staple in health-conscious Nairobi kitchens. At Cooker Repair, we repair all types of electric steamers, from compact two-tier home units to large multi-basket food steamers.

How a Steamer Cooker Works

An electric steamer is fundamentally a controlled steam generator connected to a sealed cooking chamber. Here is how the system works:

  1. Water is added to a reservoir at the base of the unit. The reservoir is designed to hold enough water for a full cooking cycle without running dry.
  2. A heating element in the base heats the water rapidly, bringing it to a boil and producing a continuous flow of steam.
  3. Steam channels upward through a vent or steam column into the food baskets stacked above.
  4. Food in the baskets is cooked by moist heat. Perforated basket floors allow steam to circulate freely around all surfaces of the food.
  5. A thermostat and timer manage the cooking cycle. On digital models, the control board allows precise time setting and may offer preset programmes for different foods.
  6. A dry-boil protection cutout monitors the water level. If the reservoir runs dry before the timer ends, this safety device cuts power to the element — preventing damage to the appliance and a potential fire hazard.
  7. A drip tray collects condensate and food juices beneath the baskets, keeping the counter clean.

Multi-tier models simply stack additional baskets, with steam passing through each level in sequence. The lowest basket closest to the steam source receives the most intense heat, which is why denser foods are placed there.

Hard Water and Your Steamer

Nairobi’s water supply is notably hard, carrying high concentrations of calcium and magnesium minerals. Over time, these minerals form limescale deposits on the heating element, dramatically reducing its efficiency and eventually causing it to fail. Regular descaling — every few months with consistent use — is the single most effective maintenance step you can take to extend your steamer’s lifespan.
