Fan Ovens: How They Work, Common Issues That We Fix

Fan ovens are among the most widely used oven types in Nairobi homes and commercial kitchens. Efficient, reliable, and consistent, they deliver excellent cooking results — but they do develop faults that require professional attention. At Cooker Repair, we repair fan ovens of all brands and models, and we understand their mechanics inside out.

How a Fan Oven Works

A fan oven, sometimes called a fan-forced oven, operates on a simple but effective principle: forced air circulation. Rather than relying on natural heat convection, a fan oven uses a motorised fan to actively circulate hot air throughout the oven cavity.

The key components work together as follows:

  1. The heating element heats up. Fan ovens typically have a circular (ring) element at the rear of the oven surrounding the fan, as well as a separate grill element at the top.
  2. The fan motor drives the fan blade. The fan pulls air through the centre of the ring element, heats it instantly, and pushes it outward across the oven walls in a circular pattern.
  3. Hot air is distributed evenly. Because the air is continuously moving, every part of the oven cavity reaches the same temperature, meaning you can cook on multiple shelves simultaneously without one shelf burning before another is ready.
  4. The thermostat maintains the target temperature. It monitors the oven cavity and cycles the element on and off as needed.

This uniform heat distribution is what sets fan ovens apart. You can bake a tray of biscuits on the top shelf and a casserole on the middle shelf at the same time, with consistent results on both. It also means fan ovens can generally be set 10–20°C lower than conventional ovens to achieve the same effect, making them more energy efficient.

The components most prone to wear are the fan motor, the ring element, and the door seal. In models with electronic controls, the control board and temperature sensors are also common failure points.
